About Ayurveda
Ayurveda is the ancient Indian science of healing. "Ayu" means "life" and "Veda" means "science" or "knowledge." The knowledge of Ayurveda comes from the vast knowledge of the human body which has sprung from the meditative awareness of the Sages. Ayurveda is a wholistic system which addresses not only the concerns of the physical body but also those of the mind and the soul.
Ayurveda draws upon a profound knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to gain precise insight into a person's state of health and well-being. The key factor to health according to Ayurveda is inner balance which is understood in terms of the three doshas (constitutions). A lack of balance of the doshas inevitably leads to the breakdown of digestion and elimination, which causes the accumulation of toxins in the body. These toxins weaken the organs, tissues, strength, and immunity. They effect a person's physical vitality and their mental state. According to Ayurveda this is the cause of dis-ease. To prevent or treat such conditions Ayurveda prescribes herbs, dietary changes, life-style changes, yoga, meditation, along with a variety of therapies and treatments which are often noninvasive and inexpensive compared to modern Western medical treatments. Ayurveda has a profound knowledge of the effects of foods, drinks, emotions, and activities upon the health of the body.
